HOOP IS LIFE

BY: DALE ALCANTARA

In Saturn City, there was a kid named Mike. His life revolved in basketball. His Dream was to become an NBA player. Mike was well known in their neighborhood because he was the best in the game of basketball. if ever there were groups who would go to their place and play basketball with them, Mike, together with his friends Kristian, Eric, Jun and Bert would play together. They never lost any basketball game when they play together. Mike’s family was poor. He has 5 other siblings. His parents could not send all of them to school. Mike was the eldest son that’s why he told his parents to prioritize his younger siblings’ studies first. So Mike was basically playing basketball everyday. One day, while Mike was playing basketball, he met a kid named Scottie. Scottie was tall.Mike estimated Scottie’s height to be 6’11 tall. Mike was tall as well for a high school aged boy. He was only 17 yet his height was 6’5. So Mike and Scottie became friends. together with Mike’s friends, they all joined Scottie’s basketball team tryouts. Scottie Studied in North Saturn Carolina High school. He was given a scholarship there that’s why he studies for free. Mike wanted to study for free. He gave everything he got in the tryouts and luckily, Mike and his friends passed the tryouts. Mike told his parents about the good news. His mother was very happy for Mike. Mike and his friends practiced everyday. They were becoming better players as time went by. Then, the Inter school Basketball League started. Mike lead his team through the elimination games. Scottie had big games as well. Mike and his team won every game they had. They were headed to the Finals! in the Finals, they would be facing 3- time champions Virgo Ballers lead by their ace player Stuffed Currie. The boys trained hard. Night and day, they worked hard for the upcoming game. The finals game day came. There were a lot of people present in the arena just to watch the most anticipated game. Also, there were NBA scouts that were looking for talented players who could possibly play in the big league, the National Basketball Association. Then the game started. Both teams scored exceptionally and played very good defense. They had a good game. The score was very close. But only one would be declared as champions. There was 10 seconds remaining. Mike cnfidently dribbled the ball. Then the people were chanting : ” 5…. 4…. 3… 2…” Mike heard the chant and shot the ball gracefully and perfectly. SPLASH! Mike made the shot! they were the champions! they won the finals game against the defending champions! Mike was very happy. He hugged Scottie and all their friends. He was also very thankful to their Coach who taught them and supported them. After the game, Mike was declared the Most Valuable Player award. He also received cash checks that would help him and his family. After celebrating their team’s victory, An agent approached Mike. He was an agent of the Chicago Bolts, an NBA team! The agent told mike he would be drafted by the Bolts. At last, his childhood dream, the dream he worked very hard for, finally Mike Achieved it. Eventually, Mike played in the NBA. He had a fruitful career with the Bolts. His status in life improved. He helped his siblings finish school. Mike thanked God for the blessings he gave to Mike. The End

Preludes by Daryll Delgado: A Blog

Before I even read the piece by Daryll Delgado, the title caught my interest. I got curious as to what this selection is all about. I was clueless as to what the title, which is preludes, really meant. So I tried looking it up in the dictionary. It got me confused even more because the dictionary was showing me more than one definition! I expected the poem to be interesting. like mysterious in a sense and I really wanted to know what it was all about.

After reading the selection, it made me feel curious. it made me wonder. it made me think for a while. As i usually do, I became silent and pondered on the selection. Though we don’t experience the family problem Nenita’s family encountered, I somewhat felt the pain of Nenita in the story. It made me angry. How can a simple, loving and forgiving woman be treated that badly? I mean, yes, her husband is a good singer. Okay. Maybe once in a while a girl would be interested. Admit it or not, singers really bring in a lot of admirers especially when they’re really good at it and of course, when you’re good looking. But does that give him the right to treat Nenita that way? I don’t think so. It made me feel that men really think they are superior. That they can do whatever they want. But in reality, they are not. We are just equal. especially in the eyes of God.

It taught me to be humble. It taught me that I’m not always above everything. I am not the best at everything that I do. But the biggest realization that I learned from the selection: Love genuinely. Loving is easy. You can meet somebody and love them. It’s that simple. But loving them genuinely would be difficult. You need time, effort, patience and especially honesty. If you are honest, You are loyal. And loyalty is rare nowadays. People tend to take love for granted. Maybe because of past experience or whatever reason they may have. But let’s not forget that without love, peace won’t be achieved. In the family, let’s be responsible enough to love and look out for one another. In the end, no matter how many times we fall, our family is there for us. Always ready to accept us no matter the circumstances are.

It had a big impact on my appreciation on the reality of life. It made me realize the true essence of loving genuinely. With genuine love, there really is no conflict. There would be lesser fights, more trust, every member of the family would be closer with one another. In real life, it’s not always about the fame or whatever is that. W should not live our lives pleasing others. If you’re doing something bad just because you think you look cool doing it, stop. You think cheating on someone you love looks cool? it’s not. It would just show your true color  or attitude. If you are inlove right now with someone, Be faithful. Don’t just be loyal. Be faithful. Because it takes a lot to be faithful. If you lvoe faithfully, then you can expect to be loved back. If you don’t, then learn to love faithfully. nothing comes easy in life. Everything is learned.

DMJ Blogs: Guide to shooting

Tips on How to Improve your Shooting Skills in the Basketball Court

As what the Cleveland Cavaliers Star Lebron James once said: “Basketball? it ain’t easy.” Some people see the game as an easy to play game. you just pound the ball a few times on the floor and shoot it at the rim. but no. Basketball is more than that. It requires dedication, passion, a lot of heart, a lot of hardwork and effort, and especially, A lot of PRACTICE.

We know a lot of people especially teens/ young people are struggling when it comes to their shooting. Some may make shots, but they are possibly doing it the wrong way. Modesty aside, I and my fellow blogger, Marc have great touches/ can shoot accurately compared to other people. Some may incorporate it with genes because some people have or ar related to basketball players. Yes, that might help, but it is really up to the person if they want to improve their shooting abilities.

I and my fellow bloggers prepared a few tips that would possibly help other people improve their shooting ability. We would call this, THE ART OF SHOOTING.

THE ART OF SHOOTING

1)Develop a Steady/ Balanced Stance.

Developing a steady and balanced stance would help a shooter maintain composure and prepare his/her body as he/she will shoot. It varies depending on the person. As long as you are comfortable and you feel like your feet is squared up to the ground, then it will do.

2)Bend your Knees!

free-throw-shooting

Bending your knees would be necessary because your knees is where you gain momentum/ strength. As you bend your knees, you are gaining balance, composure and enough strength to shoot the ball.

3)Your arm should be straight; elbow must  point the rim

This would help you straighten your shot. It is like the guide as to where the ball will go as you release it. It is very important that you straighten it up to prevent your shot to be deflected in a different angle.

Last but definitely not the least, FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION TO THE RING!

You need to pay attention at the location of the rim. Focusing for a few seconds would let your brain adjust and try to control your shot. It would also help you to aim your shot the right way.

So there you have it, I hope our tips would help you become a better shooter.

and as what they always say :

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Travel Essay (Descriptive)

ALL ABOUT SINGAPORE

BY: DALE ALCANTARA

Singapore is such a very good place. It is one of the closest country to our country Philippines. I and my family went to Singapore last summer. It was a 2-hour plane ride from Francisco Bangoy International Airport at 10:00 P.M. Singapore’s Changi International Airport in my Opinion is 10 times bigger than our airport here in Davao. It was like 10 SM Lanang’s. It was even bigger than Hong Kong International Airport. There were like 1,000 planes docked in Changi Airport. When we went out of the airportm I already noticed the cleanliness of Singapore. They had high rise buildngs, skycrapers, Condominiums, and a lot more. In the morning, we noticed that though we have the same time as they have, it was unusual for us because at 5 A.M. it was still like 12 Midnight here in the Philippines. Singapore’s culture was very fascinating as well. They were a mixture of Indians, Chinese, Mandarins, the Natives and many more. I think the best part of our Singapore trip was the food.I really enjoyed the original Chinese cuisine.Dishes like Ramen and Tempura were my favorites.i recommend other people to visit Singapore. They would really enjoy the place, the people, the culture and the food.
